Fans chanted Toso Viti Toso and other slogans in unison with some resorting to climbing rooftops to catch a better glimpse of the gold winning team.

Strict security measures were implemented particularly with Police escorting the team from the Waiqele airport to the Park and later being accorded a traditional welcome by the Vanua o Caumatalevu, Macuata.

The Chief Guest at the celebrations was the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama who said Labasa is also as important as Suva or Nadi.

BAINIMARAMA: “I know that many of you have travelled great distances from all over the North to be here today. I was determined as Prime Minister that the official commemoration of our Olympic win will not only be enjoyed by the people of Viti Levu but by all of you as well.”

“Because as far as I’m concerned, Labasa – LA -is just as important as Suva or Nadi. And every Northerner also deserves the opportunity to celebrate.”

PM Bainimarama said that the Gold medal win was a milestone in the development of Fiji and that Government has big plans for the Northern Division.

BAINIMARAMA: “To bring all of you the same level of development enjoyed by the people of Viti Levu. Whether it is roads, access to electricity or any other government services that we are steadily introducing to transform your lives. And nothing pleases me more today than to bring you the team that has lifted the spirits of every Fijian, raised our profile in the world and made us all so proud.”

Fiji Men’s Rugby 7s captain Osea Kolinisau said that they would not have won the gold medal without the enormous support from the people.

KOLINISAU: “The win is for all of you and thank you very much for making us the best and to the people that turned out here, I told the boys that when we were and when we won the gold medal in Rio, it wasn’t like really winning a gold medal and when we came home it was so clear that we really won a gold medal.”

“Seeing the support from all of you people of Suva, Nadi and from the Northern Division. Like Ben Ryan always say that we are blessed in Fiji because we have enormous support and that is you guys.”

Meanwhile, team manager Ropate Kauvesi and Leone Nakarawa also received their $30,000 from the Government.
