The donation was part of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project Program.

Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Japan Tsuguyoshi Hada said Fijians had the right to a clean environment through the country’s constitution.

HADA: “Due to our modern lifestyles, increasing population and spread of diseases, waste management is an issue that we cannot afford to ignore in our daily lives. This is why waste management has become an important component of Fiji’s government policy.”

Mr Hada said the new truck will be able to maximize its carting capacity and at the same time minimize spillage of waste during transportation.

HADA: “Waste management is not only about making our surroundings look nice. It is more about a combined effort at national level reaching right to the community levels for the benefit of the people, the environment and the nation as a whole. ”

“The Fijian Government’s waste management objectives, the formulation of its ‘Green Growth Framework’ being the first among Pacific Island Countries, which includes particular emphasis on waste management and recent initiatives such as the ‘Clean-Up Fiji’ Campaign deserve praise. These are great examples of a practical waste management strategy.”

Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Hon. Parveen Bala said the government was thankful to the Japanese Embassy for providing the garbage compactor truck.

Hon. Bala said the Nausori Town Council had been using only one garbage compactor truck and two non-specialized trucks for waste management services since 2004.
