The Fiji Police Force is calling on public service vehicle drivers to prioritize the safety of their passengers at all times.

In a statement, Director Traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra said the four passengers including a child claim they had asked the driver to stop when they noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment.

MISHRA: “They alleged several requests were made to the driver to stop however he continued to drive towards Nausori town and in a panic, they jumped from the moving bus.”

He said the four were treated at the Nausori Health Center as investigations continue with the National Fire Authority and the Land Transport Authority.

MISHRA: “If investigations prove the claims to be true, then this is a serious concern as PSV drivers should be fully aware of the importance of prioritizing the safety of their passengers at all times.”

SSP Mishra said Police will be working closely with the Land Transport Authority to ensure PSV drivers are abiding by the laws that govern their license and ensure those who continue to be negligent are held responsible.

MISHRA: “At the same time we urge all stakeholders to reinforce the importance of passenger safety with their drivers or employees at all times.”
