Road contractor unhappy with Labasa drivers
Traffic management remains a challenge at road work sites due to inconsiderate and speeding drivers, and road maintenance sites in Labasa are no exception.
Fulton Hogan Hiways is carrying out stabilising, and chip sealing works at Korotari, Nasekula and Wainikoro roads after the recent torrential downpour left the roads inaccessible.
FHH Construction Manager in the Northern Division, Scott Wilkinson, said that despite the challenge, his crews were working hard at the two sites.
“While we are managing the traffic as well as we can, we still have vehicles speeding through the sites, ignoring Stop/Go, and direction from the crew. These vehicles are reported to the LTA (Land Transport Authority),” said Mr Wilkinson.”
FHH currently has two permanent crews working in Labasa.
George Hughes, FHH Stabilising and Construction Crew Supervisor in the North, said the recent good weather has contributed to their work progress, resulting in more than half the roads already stabilised and chip-sealed.
According to Mr Wilkinson, the work in Labasa would be ongoing, even after Korotari and Wanikoro road work is completed.
“Around mid-May, one crew will move towards Savusavu doing patching and the other crew will continue around Labasa and head north,” he said.
