The Fiji Police Force has received two reports of people allegedly trying to take their lives within the last 24hours.

In a press statement released this morning, Police Spokesperson, Inspector Josaia Weicavu said investigations reveal that most of these cases of attempted suicide are linked to domestic disputes.

  • In the first incident, a 15-year-old girl of Korotogo, Sigatoka allegedly consumed ¼ cup of kerosene when her best friend left home and promised never to return. The incident took place early hours on Wednesday morning. The girl was rushed to Sigatoka Hospital and is admitted for further observation.
  • In the second incident, a 24-year-old plumber of Navau, Ba tried to commit commit suicide after a heated argument with his girlfriend’s family. The incident took place in the early hours of yesterday morning. The plumber was rushed to Ba Hospital and is admitted under stable condition.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old carpenter accidentally drank kerosene which was in a bottle thinking it was juice. Police say the incident occurred yesterday and the man was rushed to Sigatoka Hospital for medical examination, he is still admitted.

Inspector Josaia Weicavu is pleading to members of the public to refrain from trying to end their lives.

We will continue to plead to members of the public to act responsibly and not to resort to such measures in trying to eradicate a problem.There are always provisions for addressing issues through constructive dialogue.
