A 36-year-old farmer is now in police custody after he allegedly tried to suffocate his 3-months-old daughter.

Police spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu told Newswire the baby’s mother was doing her house chores whilst their 3-months-old baby was crying.

The 36-year-old man, father of the baby got irritated with the baby crying, held her up and tried to suffocate the baby.

The baby’s mother hit her husband with a bucket and managed to free her baby from her father’s hands.

The matter was reported to police by the mother and the man was taken into custody.

Inspector Weicavu also said that police would release further details once investigations are completed for charges to be made.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated today following a request made by Police Spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu this morning(11/03/16) to rephrase the statement sent yesterday. The naming of the location has caused tension with some that live in the area.
