A 30-year-old farmer of Solodamu village Kadavu drowned while drinking alcohol in a fiberglass boat with four other villagers at the harbor of Vunisea on Friday night.

In a statement, Police spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu said while they were drinking they felt the boat was sinking and then jumped out of the boat and swam towards the shore when they realized that the deceased was missing.

Inspector Weicavu said after the matter was reported, a team of Police officers from the Vunisea Police post swam to where the boat had sunk.

He said the officers located the boat at the bottom of the sea but efforts to locate the deceased proved futile as the sea was deep and dark.

However, the deceased’s body was later found on the next day around the area where their fiberglass boat had sunk.

Inspector Weicavu said the public are to refrain from consuming alcohol out at sea.

WEICAVU: “Members of the public are advised not to drink alcohol out at sea, especially in an open punt or boat. They can use the whole dry land of Kadavu to drink but not out at sea where only fish can survive.”

Inspector Weicavu said the body is now at Vunisea Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
