At about 7.30 this morning, Fishing Vessel Zhong Da 2 owned by Arianna Ltd conveying victim Reginald Elijah Tabakau who drifted from Macuata Waters on the 11th of April, berthed at the Miller’s Wharf, Muaiwalu.

Police thanked Ariana Ltd and their Fishing Vessels for rescuing 18-year-old Oreti Tabakau of Nakalou, Seaqaqa, Macuata this morning.

Tabakau was visited by police, naval and fire officers this morning. He was conveyed to CWM Hospital for a medical checkup and Police spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu reported that Tabakau is in good health.

WEICAVU: “Thanks to the Captain and crew of Fishing Vessel Zhong Da 2, especially to Tomu, the boat crew from Rabi Island who spotted the victim.”

Police Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the 18-year-old fisherman was drifting out at sea since the 11th this month.

Police were seeking assistance to mariners after a boat carrying five fishermen of Nakalou village capsized at Cakaubalavu reef outside Seaqaqa on Monday afternoon (11 April).

Police Spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weivacu said one passenger on board swam ashore and alerted the villagers.

Search was conducted where three (3) others were rescued. The fifth member, who is an 18-year-old drifted away with the boat and is yet to be located. Mariners are requested to keep a look out for this drifting boat.

Inspector Weicavu said fishermen should adhere to weather bulletins to prevent incidents from happening.

Due to the adverse weather situation and as we are still in the cyclone season, it is advisable for fishermen to adhere to weather bulletins instruction and advises to avoid this kind of incidents in future.
