The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF)as a executing agency with its partner implementing agency-UNDP Fiji Multi-Country Office has received an overwhelming support for its US $3.5 million Global Environmental Facility (GEF) project to build national capacity to manage invasive alien species, in particular the Giant Invasive Iguana (GII) on Taveuni, Qamea, Laucala and Matagi Islands.

Last week BAF and UNDP held the Stakeholder Validation Workshop- GEF-6 IAS Project at the Novotel Hotel in Lami.

BAF Executive Chairman Mr Xavier Riyaz Khan said that the Exotic introduced predators have devastating effects on small fauna populations and habitats in Fiji and other countries.

Mr Khan said BAF with its partner implementing agency appointed three international consultants to assist in preparing project document this month. The consultants are on a return mission from the first mission which started in June.

According to Mr Khan, these consultants will work on compiling and presenting the draft components of the project document – including outcomes, outputs and indicators for stakeholder review and finalization of the project document.

Mr Khan said invasive alien species particularly the Giant Invasive Iguana is a great concern to Fiji as it poses threat to biodiversity and our agricultural exports.

“The Fijian Government through BAF has invested huge sum of money in trying to eradicate the GII and the funding from GEF would further enhance the current efforts of eradication of the pest,” he said.
