The 56-year-old woman charged with one count of Abortion appeared before Magistrate Vandhana Lal in the Nausori Magistrates Court today.

Vinita Devi’s bail application was heard this morning.

Magistrate Lal granted Devi’s bail application and her sureties are to pay $1000 each.

Magistrate Lal ordered Devi to report to the Nausori Police Station every Saturday between 6am-6pm.

Magistrate Lal told Devi to also abide by the following requirements:

  • Offer residential address and is to reside at the said address
  • not to change her residential address before the court hearing
  • not to interfere with prosecution witnesses

Magistrate Lal has transferred the case to the Suva High Court and has adjourned the matter to the 12th of August.

A 56-year-old woman who is charged with one count of abortion appeared in the Nausori Magistrates court this afternoon.

Vinita Devi appeared before Magistrate Vandhana Lal.

The woman who is from Nausori is alleged to have committed the offense against a 22-year-old woman of Taveuni after she was allegedly paid by the victim’s husband earlier this month.

Magistrate Lal has adjourned the case for bail ruling to Thursday the 4th of August 2016.

The accused has been further remanded in custody.

A woman in her late 50s will be produced at the Nausori Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with one count of abortion as per Section 234 of the Crimes Decree.

In a statement, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the woman who is from Nausori is alleged to have committed the offense against a 22-year-old woman of Taveuni after she was allegedly paid by the victim’s husband earlier this month.

NAISORO: “The victim was left by her husband in the care of the accused before he returned to Taveuni.”

Naisoro said Police were alerted to the incident by medical authorities after the victim was admitted at the CWM Hospital after suffering complications following the procedure.

Investigations continue with regards to the claims made against the victim’s husbands who allegedly paid the accused $200 to perform the procedure.
