Two speakers from the United States of America’s Department of Health and Human Services are in the country to speak on non-communicable diseases (NCD) the leading cause of deaths in the Pacific.

The speakers Mr Thomas Novotny and Ms Ebony Andrews met with Olympic committees and held several speaking engagements in Suva with various public health officials to ponder on issues of NCD’s.

Director of Sports Initiatives & Digital Communications Ms Ebony Andrews said they were working on initiatives to build partnerships in preventing non-communicable diseases.

ANDREWS: “We work on initiatives to build partnerships to allow us to educate, enlighten and empower our population around fitness and around sports and nutrition and do it on the way that energizing them when it comes to their choices or even when it comes to being active we lead them in path that prevents non-communicable diseases that are weighing heavy on our nation and as well as yours.”

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health (Science and Medicine) Mr Thomas Novotny said combating NCD’s depends on an individual’s choice.

NOVOTNY: “Many of these things can be remedied by healthy choices where its sports or nutrition.”

The two will also be travelling to Tonga as part of the US delegation to the first ever Pacific NCD Summit.
