The 69th World Health Assembly will discuss issues such as non-communicable diseases, promoting health through the life course, preparedness, surveillance and response and communicable diseases.

Minister Usamate said these topics that will be discussed on a global platform are quite relevant to Fiji and the Pacific.

USAMATE: “NCDs remain the number one contributor to death in Fiji and a growing concern as we continue to lobby for behaviour change in lifestyle choices. We have just experienced a category 5 Cyclone and as a Pacific Island Country strengthening and understanding preparedness and resilience to climate change is important. Especially as climate change is linked to health.”

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services continues to lobby for and advocate the Wellness concept through the Wellness Center, whereby Wellness is an active process of becoming aware and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life.

USAMATE: “It is encouraging to see Wellness and health promotion being discussed at this global platform and from this World Health Assembly, we hope to bring back insights and outcomes on strengthening our efforts in health.”

Minister Usamate is accompanied by the National Advisor for NCD & Wellness Dr. Isimeli Tukana and Director Nursing Services Ms. Silina Waqa.

Hon. Usamate will be participating at the World Health Assembly in his capacity as the Minister for Health and Medical Services Fiji and as the chair for the Pacific Health Ministers and will also chair an informal meeting with the Pacific Health Ministers whilst in Geneva.
