The health ministry said there has been no outbreak of communicable diseases after tropical cyclone Winston.

In a press conference today, National Advisor of Communicable Diseases, Dr Mike Kama said the health ministry had recorded:

  • 262 cases of dengue fever (50% from Northern Division)
  • 104 cases of typhoid (40% from Central Division)
  • 68 cases of  leptospirosis
  • 13 cases of Zika virus
  • 5 cases of Chikungunya (compared to 16 last year)
  • 2 cases of Measles

Dr Kama said the Ministry has not linked any deaths to the diseases.

“So far, we have not registered any death on typhoid.  At moment there hasn’t been any death linking to this diseases.”

Health Inspector, Dr Elia Lawena said the ministry had a strategy to control the communicable diseases.

“The National Campaign or the clean up campaign is basically cleaning up the prompt area of the breeding places of the mosquitoes, so the national campaign will be on four Saturdays, starting on the 30th of this month.”
