Navua is expected to be declared as the 14th Fijian Municipal Town in Fiji in May.

The process to declare Navua a town was initiated on 18th September 2015, this included an advertisement in the newspaper and consultations with the community by the then Local Government committee.

Following the close of submissions, the Local Government Committee prepared its report and presented to the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Hon. Parveen Kumar Bala.

Given that there has been no objections received and the fact that the place demands a municipal governance structure with increase in economic activity and population growth, my office has accepted that Navua shall be declared a town.

Initial funding of the municipal Council operation will be from the Ministry of Local Government, Housing, and Environment budget.

One of the first aims of the municipal administration will be to establish a strategic development plan linked to national development. The administration will be tasked with the community in promoting the health, welfare and the convenience of the inhabitants.

History shows that the district town has played a significant role in national development. During colonial times, the town used to be a sugarcane growing area and in the late 1800’s a sugar mill existed on the banks of the Navua River.

The closure of the mill in 1923 led to a decline in economic development, however, in recent times, tourism and agriculture activities has led to an increase in economic activity of the area. Navua River is being utilized for tourism purposes with the Navua River Rafting hailed as one of the attractions in the area.

One of the immediate plans is to upgrade the Navua town public facilities including the Navua Municipal Market.
