The Office of the Prime Minister donated a fibreglass boat and engine worth $50,000 to the Kadavu Police Station to improve its maritime patrol in the island.

The boat was handed over by the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr Yogesh Karan at the Maritime Border Police base in Lami on Friday.

Mr Karan said the boat will strengthen the Police capability to patrol nearby villages in the Island and access areas not accessible by road.

This project is fully funded by the Office of the Prime Minister under the Small Grants Scheme for 2015 to assist police officers in Kadavu in various operations in the province and to reduce the crime rate.

Mr Karan added that during the Hon. Prime Minister’s tour to Kadavu in 2011, he was told that the station had been operating without a boat and engine for the past four years after their previous boat – ‘Niusalelevata’ was written off as it had reached its life expectancy.

I urge the officers to take good care of the boat for its intended purpose and to carry out regular maintenance. The new boat will not only benefit the Police but the Kadavu province as a whole in timely responses to reported cases.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Isikeli Vuniwaqa thanked the Government and the Office of the Prime Minister for the donation.

There are about 20 police officers in Kadavu Police station and this boat will assist them to access islands as previously they had to hire boats.
