Krishna has taken the 4FJ pledge not to eat, buy or sell kawakawa and donu during their peak breeding months, June through September.

He joins a distinguished group of champions from across sectors who have publicly stood up to help reverse the declining stocks of these two fish by encouraging their families and friends to take the pledge.

KRISHNA: “I come from an Indian background and I love kawakawa curried and spicy, especially my mother’s home-cooked ones. That’s normally the first thing I eat when I come home.”

He said he didn’t want to come back home to a Fiji where he can’t eat his mum’s kawakawa fish curry and urges the people of Fiji to get behind the campaign.

The campaign aims to allow the fish to release their eggs each year, so there are more fish the rest of the year. More than 9,000 have publicly pledged across the country and more taking the pledge privately.

Scott Radway, founder of Change to non-profit organisation that created the campaign, said Krishna is a huge addition to the campaign, as he is Fiji’s most popular football player and role model for many.

RADWAY: “Roy is using his popularity as Fiji’s best soccer player to help boost the stocks of fish that communities in Fiji depend on for food and income, not to mention their traditions.”

He said that’s a great show of character and acknowledges Roy for his effort.

RADWAY: “That’s a great show of character and we can’t thank him enough for bringing this campaign to all his fans.”
