All seasonal work employment contracts are vetted by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.

“Since seasonal work employment opportunity is a Government to Government agreement between Fiji, Australia and New Zealand, these employment contracts have gone through the consultation phase and agreed upon by all Governments and seasonal work employers,” he said.

“Prior to signing, the contents of the contracts are clearly explained to every single worker selected for deployment,” he said.

The vetting of employment contracts is to ensure that our ordinary Fijian workers are treated fairly, protected and is not discriminated under the labour laws.

“It also ensures that Fijian workers do not feel insecure about their employment,” he explained.

The Minister revealed that challenges faced by the Fijian Government last year were not due to the issues on employment contracts but on the change in seasonal work focus.

He stressed that seasonal workers must adhere to the conditions set out in their employment contracts, to remain focus and perform their best for more employment opportunities.
