Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy says that the opposition should not comment on a product that they have little knowledge about.

The Shadow Minister for Education Honourable Mikaele Leawere today issued a statement saying that the introduction of smart phones in schools could deteriorate student performance.

Reacting to Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy’s last week that smart phones will replace textbooks, Mikaele said:

“The possibility on the deterioration of student’s performance in schools is high because a smart phone is a device that can do anything. It would allow students to text, check and interact on social networking sites particularly Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and probably play games during classes.”

Dr Reddy told Newswire that the intended mobile devices would be loaded with educational content and would only have access to selection online sites.

“Today access to education is through the use of technology and there are enormous amount of material available online. Making them accessible to students will enhance their performance,” Dr Reddy said.
