The Ministry of Education in Fiji has recruited 527 new teachers for the 2016 school year.

The Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy made the announcement yesterday and said that  of that number , 375 would be primary school teachers and 152 will teach secondary school students.

Dr Reddy said the recruitment ensured there would be no more unemployed qualified primary school teachers in the job market. The secondary school teacher recruitment however was focused on improving rural and maritime education gaps.

The minister explained the ministry was trying to remove composite classes with the increase of teachers in teach sector.

“With the new establishment and teachers retiring and migrating, opportunities are now available for teacher graduates to get employment in the education sector and contribute to the development of the children of this nation,” Dr Reddy said.

“All teachers need to start preparing for the new academic term. Detailed lesson plans, lesson notes and targets for this year need to be planned now.

“Teachers who plan and prepare well in advance, without doubt, will confidently walk into day 1 with much enthusiasm and energy, ready for the new academic year.”

The Minister has asked school committees and managements to ensure the school compound, utilities and infrastructure was ready for the new school year.

“The strive for quality education cannot come any easier without all our support towards the education of Fiji’s treasured future our children. When we all play our part, definitely we will bear the fruits.”
