Former Visiting Professor of Music at FNU, Professor Soma Ghosh has been awarded the 2016 Padma Shri in Classical Music, the highest civilian awards of the Government of India.Professor-Soma-Ghosh

The award was conferred on Ghosh in April by the President of India, HE Pranab Mukherjee. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as the Home Minister of India Rajnath Singh Ji and the Honourable Speaker, were also present.

Getting the 2016 award and recognition, she joined about a dozen of India’s top music and film personalities like Priyanka Chopra, Ajay Devgan and Madhur Bhandarkar.

Dr Soma Ghosh said: “An award is a very important part of one’s professional as well as personal life. It gives us the strength and inspiration to perform twice as well.”

Dr Soma Ghosh is a leading vocalist and the first woman to ever perform in the Parliament of India.  She accepted the Visiting Professorship at FNU in 2013 for six months.
