The school term dates for the academic year 2016 has been finalized by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Hon. Dr. Mahendra Reddy.Dr. Reddy said  at the end of Term 1, the school will break for one week only as there was already one week break immediately after Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Dr. Reddy added that taking into account the loss of teaching and learning time due to Cyclone Winston and the current floods, the Ministry has decided to reduce the Term 2 break from two weeks to one week as well.

The one week gained will be added to Term 3 and thus, there will be one more week of teaching/learning time. This is an exceptional year and we all need to rise up and sacrifice. By teaching one more week, we will greatly assist the students in the cyclone/flood-affected areas who have lost some teaching time. The ones in the non-affected areas will also benefit with this additional week.

It is in the interest of our children that we all sacrifice the little bit of comfort and ensure Winston does not deter their dreams

He reiterated that this is an exceptional year and this change is only for this year and it’s only one-week loss of leisure time for our teachers.

The 2016 new school Term dates are as follows:

  • School Term : 18/01/2016 – 29/04/2016   [14 weeks]
  • Holidays        : 30/04/2016 – 08/05/2016  [1 week]
  • School Term : 09/05/2016 – 12/08/2016   [14 weeks]
  • Holidays       : 13/08/2016 – 21/08/2016    [1 week]
  • School Term : 22/08/2016 – 25/11/2016    [14 weeks]
  • Holidays       : 26/11/2016 -16/01/2017       [7 weeks]

Minister Reddy stated that more strategies will be announced later on how students will be provided with additional learning hours and resources to ensure they are not disadvantaged in any way while trying to gain knew knowledge and while preparing for their external exams.
