Schools around the country had been directed by the education minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy to assess the situation and to close schools at their discretion.
Dr. Mahendra Reddy yesterday advised all school managements, teachers, parents and students to take a proactive approach as TC Winston is moving close to the Fiji Group and is expected to affect parts of the central division including Kadavu and Suva.
This is to ensure that the safety of students travelling back home is paramount.
I am pleading with all students around the country to please adhere to instructions given by their teachers and parents as we prepare for Cyclone Winston.
We have noted in the past that students tend to ignore instructions and at times led to loss of lives. I hope this time around all students and children around the country will take heed of all instructions given and ensure that safety is paramount always
The Minister for Education further advised parents to monitor carefully weather reports and to make informed decisions regarding the movement of children.
Category 4 TC Winston on route to Fiji is expected to bring about flash flooding and strong destructive winds. The momentum of its movement has the potential to develop later into a Category 5.
Hence, we are giving parents the liberty to make right and just decisions in this challenging situation we are about to face
I also wish to inform all school managements and school heads to secure their schools and ensure that all resources in schools are kept in a safe place. All school heads should also ensure that all loose materials are moved to safer place and flood prone areas should start moving all valuable materials to areas above flood level
All school heads are advised to contact their district education offices immediately for any assistance and advice they require.
I hope that we will work together and take heed of all the warning given by the weather office to ensure the safety of our students, teachers and schools
Schools in the Eastern half of Viti Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, Lomaiviti and Lau Groups are advised to remain closed until further notice.
