Five senior citizen’s homes around the country were given a grant of $10, 000 each,  a commitment by the Fijian Government to the care of elderly persons.

The grant was given through the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation to:

  1. Housing Assistance and Relief Trust (HART)
  2. Suva Relief Trust and Pearce Home
  3. Chanel Home of Compassion
  4. Senior Citizens Ba Community Centre
  5. Senior Citizens Charitable Trust of Nadi.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Mereseini Vuniwaqa acknowledged the senior citizen’s homes for the compassion and commitment in looking after elderly and reassured them that the Ministry would continue to support the Homes so that quality and affordable care is given to senior citizens.

“Government assistance towards Institutional homes for the elderly is a way of recognising the rights of our senior citizens. The government cannot do this alone. Hence the support for community-run or organization-run facilities. It is also important for family units to play their part as we know how fulfilling and comforting it is for the elderly to be united with their loved ones”.
