Laitia Nalawa, convicted of the rape of a nine-year-old girl in Nakasi last year, has been sentenced to 18years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 17 years, this afternoon.

Suva High Court judge, Justice Salesi Temo said children were the future of Fiji, and this should serve as a warning to child rapists.

Nalawa’s trial was held last week, with two out of three accessors finding him guilty.  Justice Temo concurred with the assessor’s decision.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, a brief outline of the sentence:

  • Count 1. Burglary- 2 years imprisonment.
  • Count 2. Theft- 9months imprisonment.
  • Count 3. Assault with intent to rape – 3years imprisonment.
  • Count 4. Rape- 18 years imprisonment.

The sentences are made concurrent hence, the accused is sentenced to 18 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 17 years.
