A man is in police custody over the rape of a 21-year-old tertiary student in Nakasi last Saturday, after arranging a date with her on Facebook.

Police say the girl met the  27-year-old unemployed man on Facebook where they exchanged contact information. The two agreed to meet last Saturday at a secluded area where the girl was allegedly raped by the man. The suspect is in custody at the Nakasi Police Station.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said people must be careful of how they used social media sites as criminal elements could use these avenues to prey on innocent parties.

Going to the extent of meeting someone personally, especially if you have only had contact via social media, is strongly advised against as there’s always the possibility of people not being entirely truthful about who they are.
