A 31-year-old man charged with the rape of a 7-year-old in Tomuka, Lautoka last year appeared at the Lautoka Magistrates Court this afternoon.

The accused is believed to be related to the victim, hence his name will not be published.

The man appeared before before Magistrate Rangajeewa Wimalsena.

The plea has been deferred and the case has been transferred to the Lautoka High Court.

The case has been stood down for mention on the 4th of August and the accused has been remanded at the Natabua Corrections Centre.

A 31-year-old man has been charged with the rape of a 7-year-old in Tomuka, Lautoka last year.

Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho, said his investigators had managed to link the accused to the alleged incident after “months of painstaking work”.

The accused has been charged with one count of rape, one count of abduction and one count of wrongful confinement.  He will be produced today at the Lautoka Magistrates Court.

QILIHO: “As is with sexual offences case the focus of my investigators has been on ensuring those responsible are brought to justice, and this has not shifted from the day the report was initially received.”

Commissioner Qiliho added this should send a strong message of the Police’s commitment in cases where children were victims of crime.
