Former policeman sentenced for rape of 14-yr-old

Michael Shailendra Pratap was found guilty of 3 counts of rape and one count of sexual assault and was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by Judge Vinsent S. Perera today.

In January last year, Pratap raped a 14-year-old schoolgirl near the Nasese Police Stores, where he worked as a police officer.

The victim lived in the police barracks nearby and her father was a member of the police band.

Justice Perera determined that some aggravating factors in the case were that Pratap had committed the offences while the girl’s hands were tied at the back, that Pratap exploited the victim’s vulnerability and naivety, and that the age gap between Pratap and the victim was 27 years.

Pratap, 42,  is married with three daughters and had served in the Police Force for 21 years.

The victim was a daughter of another policeman, and Judge Perera said Pratap brought disrepute to the police force by his conduct.

Considering the time spent in custody, Pratap will serve the next 12 years and 11 months in prison and will only be eligible for parole one year before his sentence ends.
