The 74-year-old man accused of raping his 4-year-old granddaughter was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

The elderly man had been found guilty of one count of rape by Justice Vincent Perera earlier this week.

The court heard that the incident took place between 1st December 2012 to 31st January 2013 in the island of Vanuabalavu, Lau.

While delivering the sentence Justice Perera said he considered the serious breach of trust and the age gap of 67 years as the aggravating factors and exploited the vulnerability of the girl.

The man will be eligible for parole after six years.

A 74-year-old man accused of raping his 4-year-old granddaughter was found guilty of one count of Rape by Justice Vincent Perera at the Suva High Court yesterday.

The State Prosecutor and Defence requested to file their sentencing submissions today.

Justice Perera agreed and told the State Attorney to submit an impact statement to the Defense counsel as this would allow the Defense counsel to include it in the submission.

Yesterday, two assessors found the elderly man guilty of one count of Rape while the third assessor found him not guilty of rape but guilty of one count of sexual assault.

The man has been further remanded in custody and will be sentenced this Friday.
