Thirty-nine male offenders under the age of seventeen have been charged with defilement, abduction, indecent assault, rape and theft.

Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said these statistics were not to be taken lightly.

QILIHO: “These are statistics that should have everyone talking and looking for solutions as to why our children are becoming statistics of crime. I am not one to be caught in statistics as I believe one case is one too many.”

He said “social commitments that served no meaning or purpose” should be removed from parents lives.

QILIHO: “No matter how many of my officers I deploy or mobile patrols we conduct, we cannot stop these from occurring because these crimes are happening within the very place that should be a safety zone for our children.”

“These are moral crimes which can only be addressed through concerted efforts, religious groups, civil society and members of the community.”

Brigadier-General Qiliho said there had been some crime cases painting negative images of Fiji.

QILIHO: “Recently there have been some major cases of interests which have used to paint a negative image of Fiji as a lawless country; however, I can assure every Fijian that this could not be further from the truth as the statistics clearly speaks for themselves and prove otherwise.”

Commissioner Qiliho said kerbing illegal activities was a task that needed assistance from the general public as well.

QILIHO: “We cannot do this alone. We need everyone’s help and I hope that now since everyone has a fair idea of what has happened, they will be able to take more ownership of their safety and that of their loved ones.”
