22 charged with serious sexual offences in June,12 victims under 18

Statistics released by the Office of the Director Public Prosecutions (ODPP) today revealed that a total of 22 people were charged in 47 separate incidents of serious sexual offences in June this year.

The offences were:

  • Rape (36)
  • Attempted rape (2)
  • Indecent assault (4)
  • and sexual assault (5)

There were two people charged with serious sexual offences that were under the age of 18 years.

There were 21 victims of the 47 separate incidents.

There were a total of 12 victims of serious sexual offences under the age of 18 years.

There were five sexual offences that occurred where the victims were related to the accused person. Of the five, one was marital rape.

There was one serious sexual offence where the accused person is a church Pastor and the victim was 16 years old.

There were five cases that were discontinued after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed.

  • Please note that a number of rape victims as well as victims under the age of 18 years were also victims of other serious sexual offences. Similarly, a number of accused persons were also charged with more than one offence.
