A video has been circulated on Facebook depicting the theft of a motor vehicle in Lautoka last week.

The video showed a man park his Toyota Prado vehicle along a street in Lautoka and enter a nearby shop, leaving the car unlocked with his wife and two children inside. Shortly after, some youth were seen opening the doors of the vehicle and attempt to drive off.

The owner of the car rushed to confront the hijackers but was assaulted by the perpetrators.  The mother and children were forcibly taken out the vehicle, with one of the children almost run over by the car as he lay on the kerb of the street.  Passersby tried to assist the family but were fought off by the perpetrators.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident and said a search was conducted as soon as the report was received.  The vehicle was found abandoned on the same night, and the pursuit of those involved is continuing.

NAISORO: “A team has been tasked to identify those seen in the footage and anyone who may have information that could assist our investigators is requested to call Crime Stoppers on 919.”
