Detective Constable Krishan Keshwan was struck on the head by a cane knife during an attempted robbery at a shop in Valelevu yesterday afternoon. He is currently recovering at his home and the police are yet to make any arrests.

Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said the attack on DC Keshwan proved the dangers his officers faced when confronting violent situations on reports of aggravated robberies.

The Commissioner said the Fiji Police Force was an unarmed institution and his officers could only rely on non-lethal forms of gadgets such as batons and pepper sprays as a means of protection.

He said he would pursue working with the military to have a specialised unit and relevant legislations in place to effectively attend to violent cases for the sake of his officers’ safety.

Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho added that despite criticism against his stand, he would continue efforts to avoid other officers falling victim to similar incidents.
