The 19-year-old driver involved in the fatal road accident in Lautoka over the weekend has been charged with one count of “Dangerous Driving Occasioning Death”.

In a statement, Police spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the driver will be produced at the Lautoka Magistrates Court today.

Inspector Weicavu said for those who were involved in the two separate accidents at Sigatoka over the weekend are still admitted at the Lautoka Hospital.

WEICAVU: “Six persons are currently admitted at the Lautoka Hospital. Two victims have been discharged. It is advisable that we drive with extreme care and attention and just avoid over speeding.”

The road death toll now stands at twenty compared to twenty-nine for the same period last year.

A 46-year-old woman of Waiyavi in Lautoka died in an early morning road accident near the Viseisei bypass on the Queens Highway.

The woman died after she was thrown out of a vehicle driven by a 19‑year‑old.

Police Spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the driver and two other passengers fled the scene after the accident.

WEICAVU: “The driver and his two other passengers fled the scene but police managed to get them an hour later.”

The driver is now in custody while the second passenger is admitted in the Lautoka hospital.

The post‑mortem is expected to be conducted tomorrow.
