Man walks free from murder charges
The Suva High Court yesterday acquitted a PNG student over his involvement in a fire at a house in Nasinu that killed five people two years ago.
Mr Mathew Gunua, 22, was charged with five counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of arson, one count of aiding and abetting and one count of damaging property.
Mr Binesh Prasad, 34, who was charged with Mr Gunua, had previously pleaded guilty to all charges and will be sentenced today.
The five killed in the fire at Narere included Mr Prasad’s father-in-law, his wife, 10-year-old daughter, and a couple who were tenants at the house.
High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo agreed with the verdict of the assessors who had unanimously found Mr Gunua not guilty of all charges.
Justice Temo also said he concluded that Mr Gunua did not have any intention to kill the five people and that he found the prosecution’s witnesses were unreliable.
