The 22-year-old driver who allegedly lost control of his vehicle near Centerpoint (Laucala Beach, Suva) has been granted bail.

Vishal Shavendra Dayal appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza at the Nasinu Magistrate’s Court this afternoon.

Magistrate Hamza granted Dayal’s Bail application under the following strict conditions:

  • a cash bail of $1000
  • 2 sureties to pay $2000 each
  • surrender all travelling documents
  • a stop departure order
  • curfew from 6pm to 6am
  • not to reoffend
  • and not to change his residential address.

Dayal was also told to surrender his passport and not to interfere with any witnesses.

Dayal was ordered to report to the Samabula Police Station every Tuesday and Thursday from 6am to 6pm.

The matter will be called again at the Nasinu Magistrate Court on the 15th of July, 2016.

Vishal Shavendra Dayal appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza charged with one count each of:

  • Dangerous Driving Occasioning Death
  • Dangerous Driving Occasioning Bodily Harm
  • Dangerous Driving

Police objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence and the risk of interfering with witnesses.  Dayal has been remanded in custody and the bail hearing continues tomorrow.

The 22-year-old driver who allegedly lost control of his vehicle near Centerpoint on Friday night is yet to be questioned due to medical reasons.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the 22-year-old driver was discharged from the CWM hospital.

NAISORO: “The driver was discharged yesterday but the 19-year-old is still admitted. She’s reported to be recovering.”

Meanwhile, the post-mortem examination of the victim will be conducted today.

The 19-year-old female remains admitted in hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

A 47-year-old taxi driver died this morning after a vehicle collided with the taxi at Centerpoint, Kings Road last night.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said that around 11 pm on Friday, the private vehicle driven by a 22-year-old man was travelling to Nausori when he lost control of the vehicle.

The taxi driver was rushed to hospital with serious injuries last night. However, police confirmed that the man died earlier this morning.

NAISORO: “As of this morning it has been confirmed that the 47-year-old driver died. The vehicle driven by a 22-year-old man of Tamavua was traveling along Kings Road passing Centrepoint on his way to Nausori with a passenger a 19-year-old female FNU student of 8 miles in Makoi. He allegedly lost control of the said vehicle and bumped a taxi traveling in the opposite lane driven by a 47-year-old man of Pritam Singh Road in Makoi.”

The 22-year-old suspect is reported to be in stable condition while the other passenger is in critical condition.
