Binesh Prasad appeared before Judge Justice Salesi Temo.

Prasad is charged with five counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of arson and damaging property.

Prasad appeared in court without any legal representation.

The case was first called in court on 4 November 2015.

Justice Temo told Prasad that the court had given him sufficient time to get a lawyer

TEMO: “When you pass 21-years-old, you are than given the responsibility to care for yourself. You cannot push the responsibility to your family. You are sleeping on the job on getting yourself a lawyer.”

Justice Temo added that with the Legal Aid Commission given a large budget by Government, people can no longer enter the High Court without a lawyer.

TEMO: “I don’t want a repetition of today. You have five weeks to look for a counsel.”

Binesh Prasad has been denied bail and is remanded in custody.

The case has been adjourned to the 19th of August.

Background:

Binesh Prasad is alleged to have set fire to a house in Narere on the 15th of October 2015. The fire claimed the livesĀ of five people. Three of the victims were related to Mr. Prasad while the other two victims were tenants.
