State Prosecutor said that Rakesh Charan has another case pending of similar nature and was on bail when he reoffended.

Defence lawyer Aman Ravindra-Singh filed bail applications in which he stated that his client was wrongfully charged and was not in possession of the drugs.

Singh added that Charan was not at his residence in Nausori when the drugs were found.

The prosecution objected to bail stating that the accused had previous known cases before the court and that it was in the public interest that Rakesh be remanded in custody.

Justice Temo adjourned the matter to 23rd of June for bail hearing.

The accused has been further remanded in custody.

Defence lawyer Aman Ravindra-Singh told the court that the charges placed on his client were an allegation.

SINGH: “The charges have been misconceived. My client was not in possession of illicit drugs.”

Justice Temo responded saying that submissions can be made to the Office of the Director of Prosecutions.

Defence lawyer also requested for an early date for bail applications.

Justice Temo said the application can be filed on Monday (May 23) and that after the court has received a response from the Prosecution, the matter will be heard accordingly.

The matter has been adjourned to the 10th of June 2016.

The accused has been further remanded in custody.

Rakesh Charan was charged in 2014 with unlawful importation of illicit drugs, unlawful possession of illicit drugs and one count of ‘Money Laundering’.

Rakesh Charan was allegedly found in possession of methamphetamines worth $46,000 at his residence on Monday (9/05/16).

The State informed the Court that the accused has other pending cases in which he is charged with similar offences.

The State objected to bail on the grounds that the accused has re-offended whilst on bail.

The matter has been adjourned to 20 May 2016 for the matter to be called in the High Court.

The accused has been remanded in custody.

A 48-year-old man of Navuso, Nausori was found in possession of methamphetamine worth an estimated street value of $46,000.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said a raid was conducted after a tip-off.

NAISORO: “We received a tip off from someone. A raid was conducted by Police at his residence on Monday afternoon whereby packets of powder and white crystals were discovered. Tests conducted have since confirmed the substances to be methamphetamine.”

Naisoro said the accused has been charged with one count of ‘Unlawful possession of illicit drugs’ and will be produced in the Nausori Magistrates Court today.

Last month two men found guilty in relation to a cocaine bust in Lautoka were sentenced to fourteen years imprisonment.
