Reddy resigns as Education Minister
The Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has announced that Dr Mahendra Reddy resigned as Minister of Education, Heritage and Arts.
In a statement, PM Bainimarama said Dr Reddy had sent him the following letter:
“In order to preserve the reputation of Government, I wish to step aside by resigning as Minister for Education, Heritage, Arts and National Archives of Fiji while the charges laid by FICAC against me are heard. This is a private matter and I need to clear my name without causing a distraction from the great work the FijiFirst Government is doing for the Fijian people.”
The Prime Minister added that he had accepted the resignation and would announce an Acting Minister later.
BAINIMARAMA: “Until the charges laid by FICAC are determined by the Court, the Honourable Dr Mahendra Reddy shall remain as a Member of Parliament.”
Dr Reddy appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday charged with one count of “Bribery” contrary to Section 140 (2) of the Electoral Act No.11 of 2014 and one count of “Undue Influence” contrary to Section 141 of the Electoral Act No.11 of 2014.
FICAC: “It was alleged that Mr Reddy in May this year in the Western Division, in order to influence the vote of a School Manager, directly conferred or offered to offer a benefit namely a steady water source for the School.It is also alleged that Mr Reddy interfered with the free exercise or performance of a political right of the School Manager that is relevant to the 2018 Election.
The Complaint was referred to FICAC by the Secretary to the Electoral Commission under section 18 of the Electoral Act.
