The Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) today signed an agreement with Vodafone Fiji Limited enabling customers to purchase prepaying electricity tokens through the use of mobile phones.

It is in people’s hands almost 24 hours a day. Post pay billing service becomes a very costly operation to maintain for FEA as we go deeper into the rural areas. If our customers did not pay their bills on time, disconnection and reconnection becomes a logistical challenge and is very costly and a time consuming excercise.

Mr Patel said FEA had been working on options to make prepay electricity tokens more accessible to its customers as it provides convenience to its customers and brings in greater efficiencies and cost savings.

The Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Fiji, Mr Pradeep Lal said their aim as a business has always been to add value and improved productivity through the use of technology and to empower its customers.

Bussinesses and individuals alike are now beginning to appreciate the convinience and cost saving that M-PAiSA provides as an effective and convinient payment option. The service allows better access and more freedom to our customers.

When questioned about if Digicel Fiji would also have the same service with the Fiji Electricity Authority, CEO Hasmukh Patel said FEA would later launch the service with Digicel Fiji sometimes in March this year.

Mr. Patel said the service was available free of charge to FEA customers.

To use the service, both Vodafone and Inkk Mobile customers are to dial *181# to access the M-PAiSA menu, select option 7 for Bill pay and then select option 2 for FEA and follow the simple steps to complete the transaction. Customers need to be registered for the M-PAiSA service and hold a balance in their M-PAiSA account to use this service.

Vodafone and FEA will conduct joint roadshows in areas where FEA customers are predominantly on prepay electricity to register and educate customers about this new service.
