Pregnant women in rural areas will continue to benefit through the ‘Food Voucher Program’ which was allocated $0.5 million

The Minister of Finance, Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that the continuation of the assistance scheme is to reduce cases of malnutrition and complications during pregnancy.

The $0.5 million comprises of $30-per-month food voucher for the duration of 10months for recipients. Minister Sayed-Khaiyum also said that government has made foods specially prepared for infants to be duty-free in the 2016-2017 Budget.

Funding has also been allocated to the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation to establish a ‘Domestic Violence Helpline’.

The 24-hour toll-free Domestic Violence Helpline, which will provide reporting and free referral platform for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The Finance Minister said that Government is dedicated towards the protection of women’s rights and reduce the incidence of violence against women.

SAYED-KHAIYUM: “We must unite to stop violence, so women, girls and boys will know that they are not alone.” Even a 10-year-old girl will be able to pick up the phone and make that call.”

A sum of $170,000 is allocated for the establishment and operations of the helpline.
