The Government is setting aside $9.2 million in the 2016-17 budget for the construction of a fibre cable from Suva to Savusavu.

This was revealed by the Attorney General and Minister of Economy Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in Parliament during the budget announcement.

SAYED-KHAIYUM: “This work will be undertaken at the same time as the TUI-Samoa Cable Connection from Apia to Suva to ensure that we benefit from economies of scale and possible synergies of both the projects.”

Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the provision of the fibre connectivity to Vanua Levu was expected to open up
numerous opportunities.

Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said businesses will benefit from faster connections to the outside world and lower telecommunication charges.

The Finance Minister said that this development will also open up investment opportunities in ICT-related businesses, further boosting employment and productivity.
