$30,000 for Fijian gold medallist at Rio Olympics

The Attorney-General and Finance Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in the 2016-2017 Budget announcement tonight said any Fijian athlete who wins a gold medal at the Rio Olympics in Brazil will receive $30,000 from the Government.

He said this is part of the country’s appreciation to the gold medalist.

SAYED-KHAIYUM: “We have set aside funds for cash rewards for up to $30 thousand dollars to any Olympian who brings home the medal just to show how the country appreciates the dedication Madam Speaker.”

The Government has set aside $500,000 in the 2016-2017 Budget for this initiative.

The Attorney General wished the Olympians well ahead of Rio.

SAYED-KHAIYUM: “It takes great dedication and great sacrifice to be an Olympian and a medal or not that is worthy of our respect. Madam speaker I would like to wish our athletes great success for Rio.
